Vegetable oils

To give an idea of the size of the industry: the Dutch crushers process 3.5 to 4 million tons of oilseeds annually, of which more than 3 million tons of soybeans. We also produce 800,000 to 1 million tons of crude vegetable oil, of which around 600,000 tons is soybean oil.

However, the amounts of vegetable oils that we process are much greater. Each year, our refiners process approximately 2.1 million tons of vegetable oil, more than half of which are tropical oils (palm oil, coconut oil and palm kernel fat). These tropical oils, for the most part from oil fruits, are imported in crude form. The main activity of the following companies is the 'crushing' of oilseeds and/or the processing (refining, fractionation, hydrogenation and/or transesterification) of crude vegetable oils.

Animal fats and fish oil

Every year in the Netherlands we produce between 190,000 and 200,000 tons of animal fats. About half of that is pork fat, one third is beef fat and one tenth is poultry fat. Every year 20,000 to 25,000 tons of these animal fats are refined for use in foodstuffs. The companies below have the smelting and/or refining of animal fats as their main activity or as an important side activity.

The production of processed fish oil varies between …. and … tons. The companies below have the import, processing and/or application of fish oil as their main activity or as an important side activity.

Margarine and cooking oil

Every year we produce about 500,000 tons of margarines, low-fat margarines, and edible fats and oils. The production of margarines (including bakery margarines), with fat percentages between 41% and 80%, amounts to approximately 200,000 tons. That of low-fat marshes (40% or less fat) is around 90,000 tons. Baking and (deep) frying products account for 50,000 to 60,000 tons per year. We produce around 100,000 tons of other edible fats and oils.

The companies below are producers of one or more oils and fats products from this category.

Fat recycling

The Netherlands processes approximately 150,000 tons of used cooking oils, half of which comes from abroad (Belgium and Germany). The following companies have as their main business activity the collection and processing or trading of used cooking oils.
